HIV Prevention Programme Among Most At Risk Populations (MARPs)

Female Sex Workers and their paying and non-paying partners are some of Ghana’s most at risk for HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections. Through the support of ADRA Ghana through Global Fund and FHI Sharper through USAID, and in partnership with Ghana Health Services, Pro-Link is reducing the spread of new infections through promoting safer sexual practices amongst vulnerable groups, increasing consistent and correct condom use, increasing knowledge of HIV modes of transmission and through providing counselling and testing services.

Through our programme in partnership with FHI 360 Sharper and ADRA we achieved the following in 2011:
7187 MARPs (4333 Female sex workers and 2854 Non-pps) were counseled and tested during the outreaches
3246 clients were referred and
845 clients visited the health centers and received treatment for STI.

We are currently reaching out to selected Districts in the Ashanti, Greater Accra, Central and Volta Regions. Through our outreach and peer education activities most at risk populations are being educated about 10 key behaviours including the importance of knowing one’s HIV status, accessing counselling and testing services, disclosure of status to partners, use of condoms and lubricants correctly and consistently, access to HIV and STI treatment, gender-based violence amoung others.
